Description

PLEASE NOTE: We sell cuttings and bare root plants only. If you see a picture of a large plant in the listing it is for illustration purposes only and not what you will receive. Cuttings need to be placed in a container with water or moist soil till they root, bare root plants can be placed directly in the ground or containers and usually require daily watering till they are established. Some cuttings like succulents and cacti can be placed directly in the ground without rooting. Most cuttings do not have 100 percent success rate so we recommend you purchase a few to ensure success. Even some bare root plants will not give you 100 percent success rate after planting in the ground. Some plants are considered invasive in certain areas or provinces and the onus is on you to make sure you research the plant that you are purchasing to make sure it will work for you, your area and your landscape. The Cape Honeysuckle is a lovely ever green shrub native to the Western Cape, it is an attractive ornamental garden plant commonly used for screening and decorative purposes, and can also be trimmed to form a hedge.

Cape honeysuckle is a fast growing, scrambling, multi-stemmed shrub which may grow up to 2-3 m high and spread more than 2.5 m. It is an evergreen plant in warm regions but loses its leaves in colder ones. It has pinnately compound, glossy leaves that have oval leaflets with blunt teeth. Flowering time for this shrub is very erratic and it often flowers all year round. Flowers are tubular in showy many-flowered heads and vary in colour from red, deep orange, yellow to salmon. Pollinators love this plant and so do Hummingbirds due to it’s sweet nectar filled flowers.

Chances of success of cuttings or bare root:
MEDIUM. This plant is relatively easy plant to propagate from cuttings but it normally only has about a 60 – 70 percent success rate. it may take long to root depending on the time of year. With water rooting you can expect to see roots within 2 – 6 weeks after which you can transplant it to soil. Rooting in soil is faster especially if you use a humidity dome but be careful not to place this plant in full sun while rooting, especially if you are using a humidity dome. Bright indirect light is best. Purchasing bare root will speed up the process and give a greater chance of success since the plant has rooted already.
