Malaysian Trumpet Snails may be called Malaysian Burrowing Snails, Malaysian Live Bearing Snails, Malaysian Sails, MTS, Trumpet Snails, or simply Trumpets. They grow to around 3cm.
As a pet: Malaysian Trumpet Snails can make interesting pets for some aquarists. Under the right conditions, Trumpet Snails can be an asset to an aquatic environment. This is especially true in tanks with live plants. They normally bury themselves in the substrate and keep it churned up and aerated while looking for food, preventing the substrate from going anaerobic.
As a pest: To some hobbyists, Malaysian Trumpet Snails are an unwanted, invasive and annoying pest. They are quick to reproduce and their numbers can increase in no time if your substrate is very dirty or full of debris. Whether Malaysian Trumpet Snails are considered pet or pest depends on each individual hobbyist and the tank they are trying to keep.
Snails are beneficial to any aquarium. They play a vital role in the ecosystem with their ability to break down excess waste into something that is easier for your beneficial bacteria (and even shrimp) to consume. People often misunderstand snails and see them as ‘pests’ because in dirty, over-fed tanks snails will reproduce rapidly. In a well maintained tank they will not over-populate. People also think all snails eat plants, because they see a snail eating a plant leaf, when in fact the chances are your plant (or part of it) was dying off and the snails were doing you a favour by getting rid of it. Most snails only eat decaying matter – it is important you know which snails you are keeping and their role in your tank.
